Short answer: a MUX switch lets the laptop’s graphics card send frames straight to the screen instead of passing them through the processor’s integrated graphics. ASUS and Jarrod’s Tech both measured about a 9% average gain in frame rate, and much more in some games. The best value laptop with one is the 2026 Lenovo LOQ 15 with an RTX 5060 ($1,249.99 on October 13). It also has NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, which switches automatically, so you get the speed in games and the battery life on the desktop without restarting. For an RTX 5070 and a faster processor, choose the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025).

How we put this together: every MUX and Advanced Optimus claim below comes from the manufacturer’s own product page, spec sheet or announcement (linked), and the performance figures come from published tests. It is not based on hands-on testing by iTech Level. Prices were checked on Amazon US on October 9 and 13, 2026.

What a MUX switch does, and how much it helps

Most gaming laptops use a hybrid mode by default: the graphics card renders each frame, then hands it to the processor’s integrated graphics, which sends it to the screen. That saves battery but costs performance. A MUX switch is a chip that lets the graphics card “bypass the CPU and push its frames directly to the display”, in ASUS’s words. ASUS measured an average gain of 9%, and more than 30% in Rainbow Six Siege (ASUS). Jarrod’s Tech found a similar average of around 9% across 13 games at maximum settings, rising to about 15% at the lowest settings, with almost no difference in GPU-heavy ray-tracing games such as Cyberpunk 2077 (Notebookcheck).

In practice, a MUX helps most in fast competitive games at high frame rates, which lean on the processor, and least in demanding single-player games at max settings. The trade-off is battery life: with the graphics card driving the screen, it can’t switch off, so you’ll want hybrid mode back for work and travel.

MUX switch vs Advanced Optimus

ModeHow frames reach the screenSwitchingBest for
Hybrid (standard Optimus / MSHybrid)GPU → integrated graphics → screenAutomaticBattery life
MUX switch, GPU-only modeGPU → screenManual, needs a restartMaximum frame rates
NVIDIA Advanced OptimusEither, chosen per appAutomatic, no restartBoth, with G-SYNC

A plain MUX switch needs a restart to change modes; ASUS notes “You will need to reboot for the changes to apply.” NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus uses a hardware display switch that lets the GeForce GPU drive the screen directly and changes over automatically, without a restart, depending on the app you’re running, and it enables G-SYNC on the laptop screen (NVIDIA). Every Advanced Optimus laptop has a MUX inside; not every MUX laptop has Advanced Optimus.

“Not listed” means the maker’s page doesn’t mention the feature, not that it’s definitely missing. Features can also differ between configurations of the same laptop, so check the spec sheet for the exact model number before you buy. Cheaper models are the ones most likely to skip it.

The best gaming laptops with a MUX switch

1. Lenovo LOQ 15 (2026, RTX 5060): best value

Lenovo’s spec sheet lists NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and G-SYNC on both screens of the 2026 LOQ 15 (15AHP11), and runs every GPU option at the full 115 W (Lenovo PSREF). So you get a MUX that switches by itself, which is rare at this price. The version we found pairs an AMD Ryzen 7 250 with an RTX 5060, 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD and a 15.3-inch 1920 x 1200, 165 Hz screen, in a 4.6 lb body. It was $1,249.99 on Amazon on October 13, sold by antonline, an authorized retailer, and in stock. The catches: 8GB of graphics memory and a small SSD. See our laptop GPU power database for how its 115 W compares.

Good to know: the Acer Nitro V 16 with an RTX 5070 also has a MUX (“MUX Switch Equipped” per Acer), but on Amazon it was $1,499.99 from Acer’s authorized store on October 22, 2026 (it was $1,399.49 from a third-party seller on October 16). If Acer’s own store has it near $1,200, it would be the cheaper way to get an RTX 5070 with a MUX, but at 95 W and without Advanced Optimus.

2. ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025): best RTX 5070 with Advanced Optimus

ASUS lists the Strix G16 (2025) with “a MUX Switch with NVIDIA Advanced Optimus” and up to a 175 W RTX 5080 (ASUS). Amazon sold the RTX 5070 version with a Ryzen 9 9955HX, 16GB and 1TB (G614FP-OS94) for $1,899.99 on October 9. Advanced Optimus means you don’t have to choose between speed and battery: it switches by itself.

3. ASUS TUF Gaming A16 (2025): budget pick with Advanced Optimus

ASUS’s tech specs list “MUX Switch + NVIDIA Advanced Optimus” with G-Sync on the TUF Gaming A16 (2025) display options (ASUS), so you get automatic switching at a lower price than the Strix. On Amazon US it was mostly sold by third-party sellers on October 9, often with upgraded memory at a higher price, so compare with Best Buy and ASUS’s own store.

4. Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 10: best screen with Advanced Optimus

Lenovo’s PSREF lists NVIDIA G-SYNC and Advanced Optimus on the Legion Pro 5i Gen 10’s 240 Hz screens (Lenovo PSREF). It’s our pick for the best RTX 5070 Ti laptop in our RTX 5070 Ti and 5080 guide. Lenovo’s LOQ 15 Gen 10 (15IRX10) also lists Advanced Optimus with G-SYNC (Lenovo PSREF) if you want the feature for less.

5. ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025): most portable

A MUX in a 14-inch laptop: ASUS says the G14 (2025) uses Advanced Optimus to “automatically route frames from the discrete GPU directly to the display using a MUX Switch” (ASUS). Its GPU runs at lower power than in bigger laptops, but if you want to carry your gaming laptop every day, it’s the one to get. On Amazon US it was sold mainly by third-party sellers on October 9.

How to check for a MUX switch and turn it on

  • Before you buy: look for “MUX Switch” or “Advanced Optimus” on the maker’s spec sheet for the exact model number, not just the series.
  • On a laptop you own: look for a GPU or display mode setting (often called discrete, dGPU or Ultimate mode) in the maker’s control app or the BIOS. NVIDIA itself advises checking with the laptop maker, because support varies between configurations (NVIDIA).
  • Turning it on: the setting lives in the maker’s control software. On ASUS laptops, Armoury Crate offers MSHybrid (default), a discrete GPU mode for maximum performance and Eco mode for maximum battery life; switching to the discrete mode needs a restart (ASUS). Lenovo, Acer and MSI put the equivalent setting in their own apps.

Our verdict

A MUX switch is worth having: it’s a free performance boost of around 9% on average, and much more in some fast games. Get one with Advanced Optimus if you can, so the switching happens by itself and you keep your battery life away from games. On a budget, the 2026 Lenovo LOQ 15 with an RTX 5060 gives you both for $1,249.99. For more power, choose the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025), the TUF Gaming A16 or a Lenovo Legion. Frequently asked questions

What does a MUX switch do on a gaming laptop?

It lets the graphics card send frames directly to the laptop screen instead of passing them through the processor’s integrated graphics. That raises frame rates, at the cost of battery life while it’s on.

How much does a MUX switch improve FPS?

ASUS measured a 9% average gain, with more than 30% in Rainbow Six Siege. Jarrod’s Tech found around 9% at max settings across 13 games and about 15% at low settings, with little difference in GPU-heavy ray-tracing games.

Is Advanced Optimus the same as a MUX switch?

Advanced Optimus uses a MUX-style hardware switch but changes over automatically and without a restart, depending on the app, and enables G-SYNC. A plain MUX switch has to be changed manually and usually needs a restart.

What is the cheapest gaming laptop with a MUX switch?

On October 13, 2026, the cheapest we’d recommend was the 2026 Lenovo LOQ 15 with an RTX 5060 at $1,249.99 on Amazon US; Lenovo lists Advanced Optimus on it. Cheaper RTX 5050 laptops may have a MUX too, but check the exact model’s spec sheet.

Does a MUX switch matter with an external monitor?

Less. A MUX switch affects the laptop’s built-in screen. If your external monitor is plugged into a port wired to the graphics card, frames already go straight to it, so check your laptop’s manual for which ports those are.
