Can you use the Sony WH-1000XM4 for gaming?

Short answer: Yes, the Sony WH-1000XM4 work well for gaming — especially for single-player titles, immersive RPGs, and esports where positional audio matters less. Their industry-leading noise cancellation, 30-hour battery life, and exceptional sound quality make them comfortable for long sessions. The trade-offs: there’s no dedicated gaming mic (you’ll rely on the built-in beamforming mics), and Bluetooth latency adds 100-200ms versus a wired headset — noticeable in competitive FPS but fine for everything else.

Best for: RPGs, story games, MMOs, podcasts during gameplay, work-from-home meetings.
Not best for: Competitive FPS, fighting games, or anywhere milliseconds matter.

Most asked questions about SONY WH-1000XM4 Headphones

Are the Sony WH-1000XM4 good for gaming?

Yes, the WH-1000XM4 work well for gaming when connected over their wireless dongle or a 3.5mm cable, which avoids Bluetooth audio lag. Over Bluetooth alone, the slight latency makes them better for casual or single-player games than competitive shooters where exact audio timing matters. Their standout strengths for gaming are the excellent noise cancellation for focus and the comfortable fit for long sessions.

Can you use the Sony WH-1000XM4 for gaming on PC and console?

You can. On PC, plug in via the 3.5mm cable or USB for lag-free audio. On PlayStation and Xbox, the simplest route is the included 3.5mm cable into the controller's headphone jack. Bluetooth works for chat and casual play, but wired or low-latency connections give you the responsiveness competitive games need.

Do the WH-1000XM4 have a good microphone for gaming chat?

The built-in microphones are designed for calls rather than gaming, so they're fine for party chat but won't match a dedicated gaming headset's boom mic. If clear voice comms are a priority, pair the XM4 with a separate clip-on or desk microphone.

At first I was uneasy about my purchase, but after some time with them I really liked them. Once downloading the app specific for the headphones, I was able to adjust the headphones to my liking. The bass is incredible on these. I have the air pod pros and the base is a bit better on these.

I love them, the best investment to take to the gym and stay in the zone, the noise cancellation is on point. They are easy and light to carry I love the neutral color to the headphones. They are great in sound quality, I am comparing them to the bose noise cancellation pink and white ones and I am also a user of the beats studio 3’s, these are the best, big fan of bose but these definitely knocked them out the park. I was really impressed with Sony’s ability to create such an important piece of audio wear.
