Verdict: The premium over-ear pick for iPhone and Mac owners: stronger noise cancelling than the original AirPods Max, Apple’s newest features and seamless switching. They’re heavy and pricey, and battery life trails Sony and Bose.
Good for
- iPhone, iPad and Mac users: automatic switching, Personalized Spatial Audio and Live Translation
- Quieter travel: Apple says noise cancelling is up to 1.5x more effective than the previous generation
- Lossless, ultra-low-latency listening over a USB-C cable
Skip it if
- You use Android: most of the smart features need Apple devices
- You want light headphones: 386.2 g
- You want the longest battery: up to 20 hours vs about 30 on Sony and Bose flagships

Buying on Amazon
At the time of writing, Apple’s Amazon store sells the AirPods Max 2 bundled with two years of AppleCare+, and the color options are separate listings. Check the seller and the “AirPods Max 2” name before you buy: the older 2024 USB-C AirPods Max (H1 chip, without Adaptive Audio or Live Translation) is still sold, often cheaper.
How it compares
- Sony WH-1000XM6: lighter, longer battery, works well with Android
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen): comfort-focused rival, up to 30 hours
