How the earbud finder works
Most earbuds quizzes ask a dozen vague questions and land you on whatever the site is trying to sell that month. Ours asks three, and we're upfront about exactly why those three and how the answer gets picked.
How the recommendation works
We score every pair of earbuds in our comparison set across three factors that actually determine whether you'll be happy with a purchase, not just whether the spec sheet looks good:
- Phone/ecosystem fit (35% of the score). An AirPods Pro on Android still works, but you lose Spatial Audio and seamless switching — so ecosystem match counts for over a third of the result.
- Primary use case (35% of the score). Sound quality, noise cancellation, workout durability, and raw value-for-money pull in different directions. We weight whichever one you say matters most, rather than averaging everything into a mushy "good all-rounder" pick.
- Budget tier (30% of the score). We hard-filter out anything outside your stated range first, then rank what's left — so you never get a "great pick" that costs three times what you said you'd spend.
Your three answers run through this weighting against every model in our set, and the highest-scoring match becomes your recommendation, with a runner-up shown as a second option in case the top pick doesn't feel right for you.
What's currently in the comparison set
As of this update, we compare six widely available models spanning three phone ecosystems (iPhone, Android, Samsung Galaxy) and four budget tiers, from under-$50 workout earbuds to flagship noise-cancelling models:
- Apple AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- Apple AirPods Pro 3
- Soundcore P30i by Anker
- Google Pixel Buds Pro 2
- JLab Go Sport+ Wireless Workout Earbuds
- Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 FE
We're adding more models as we review them — if a pair you're considering isn't in the set yet, our full wireless earbuds roundup covers a wider range with the same no-nonsense approach.
